Some People Buy the House for the Garage

You know who you are. You scroll past the kitchen photos to find the shop. You count bays before bedrooms. You've measured ceiling height for a lift you don't own yet.

I've spent nearly 20 years selling homes and almost eight selling collector cars. For most of that time, those were two separate businesses. Open House, Open Road is where I finally put them in the same driveway.

Episode One: An Erie Home and a 2019 BMW X3 M40i

The first episode is live. We toured an Erie home with a 5-car garage and walked it with listing agent Hawk Vanek of LIV Sotheby's International Realty, who knows every inch of it.

Five bays is a good start. The bigger surprise is the second house. An attached mother-in-law home has its own entrance off the driveway, a full kitchen, two bedrooms, and a sunroom. The two homes meet in a shared dining room with vaulted ceilings and a double-sided fireplace.

The main home has an office, a loft with a balcony, and a primary suite with mountain views. Downstairs is set up as a theater, rec room, and gym. It all sits on 0.68 landscaped acres, with a covered patio and a hot tub out back.

The Car: 2019 BMW X3 M40i

Then we took the keys to a 2019 BMW X3 M40i from the Cult Cars lineup. It runs BMW's B58 inline-six, the same engine family Toyota borrowed for the Supra. The X3 M40i made 355 horsepower in 2019. The 2020 Supra made 335. So yes, the "family SUV" had more power than the sports car.

It's a two-owner car with under 50,000 miles, and it's coming soon to cultcarsforsale.com. Check back soon on the Cult Cars website for pricing and more info.

Where This Is Headed: You, in the Driver's Seat

The videos are the trailer. The real thing happens in person.

Starting this fall, Open House, Open Road becomes a monthly small-group drive. A handful of enthusiasts, each in their own car, following a route I've built around Colorado's best roads. Mountain switchbacks, open ranch country, the kind of pavement that reminds you why you own the car you own.

Somewhere along the way, we stop at a home for sale with a serious garage. Think five bays or more, sometimes a shop or a lift bay. The listing agent meets us there and walks us through it. Nobody's handing out flyers. You just get to see a garage most people only find in listing photos.

Then we eat. A good lunch somewhere out on the drive, and the conversation goes wherever it goes. Usually it's cars. Sometimes it's "what would you put in that third bay."

Maybe you're shopping for your next home. Maybe you're a couple years out. Maybe you just like a good drive and good company. All three are welcome.

How a Drive Day Works

  1. Eight seats, RSVP only. Small on purpose. Any bigger and it turns into a parade.

  2. Bring your own car. Daily driver, weekend toy, project you're still sorting out. It all counts.

  3. A curated route. I scout every drive ahead of time for scenery, flow, and a few stretches worth enjoying (legally).

  4. One standout garage. A home for sale with five or more bays, toured with the agent who knows it best.

  5. Lunch on the road. Somewhere worth the drive, before we head home.

The first drive is Friday, Nov. 20. We're heading south. RSVPs get the full route closer to the date.

Already a reader? Reply to the next issue with "count me in," and tell me two things: what's in your garage now, and what's in your dream garage. I'll use your answers to shape the route and pick the right house.
